History

In the early 1960’s, the Salisbury Preservation Society was formed by a small group of public spirited individuals with the aim of preserving the best of Salisbury and District’s wonderful environment. At that time some of today’s listed buildings were actually threatened with demolition. In 1974, the name was changed to the Salisbury Civic Society, part of the national umbrella charity, the Civic Trust.

Over the years, the role of the Society has expanded. Today, the Society is not only the principal guardian of the built environment, but also monitors all development projects and planning applications to see what effect they might have on the surroundings. Salisbury is a marvellous cathedral city, but it won’t stay that way unless people are alert to the future intentions of developers.

As a non-political organisation, the Society tries to maintain an independent stance on all matters. Transport is a problem that bedevils the activities of all who live in Salisbury. The choice between retaining a medieval city in beautiful surroundings, and at the same time, maintaining a reasonable degree of access is not an easy one to make. The Society aims not to allow transport to dominate discussions totally.

From the above, it can be seen that the Civic Society is a busy affair with much to do to try and safeguard the Salisbury environment. The Society always needs new members. Please consider joining us.

Achievements

During the past few years the Salisbury Civic Society has:

  • Instituted an Award Scheme
  • Promoted the concept of pedestrianising the High Street in Salisbury
  • Assisted the District Council in preparing a document to encourage developers to construct buildings sympathetic to the local environment
  • Campaigned for an improved quality of build for infill houses in the Villages and City centre
  • Promoted the concept of introducing buildings of good modern design into the District (with singularly little success to date)
  • Encouraged the District Council to provide Public Art features in Salisbury
