Celebrating our Heritage Enhancing our Environment Shaping our Future

Lord Christopher Congleton

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our Patron, The Lord Congleton,  on December 11 2015. Our sympathies go to his wife Hedi and family

In 1995 Lord Congleton, agreed to accept the Presidency in place of Lady Radnor, having already taken an active part in the affairs of the Society.
Subsequently, Lord Congleton decided to step down in 2007 and his replacement was Dame Rosemary Spencer, who is our current President. On handover Lord Congleton accepted our invitation to become Patron of the Society, the appointment having been vacant since the death of Lady Radnor in 2004.

Each year the Society makes annual awards to promote a respect for historic buildings and a desire for visual enhancement within the City and the District. The Awards Scheme began in 1993, targeting either new buildings or work to existing buildings with the two categories being looked at in alternate years.

The Lady Radnor Award goes to the most outstanding of the Conservation Award winners. This award was created to commemorate many years’ service to historic buildings in the District by the Society’s former Patron.

The New Buildings Awards Scheme is held every odd year. The objective is to find new buildings with quality which sets them apart. In 2015, with his ready agreement, the Lord Congleton Award for New Buildings was created and was awarded for the first time at a ceremony in January 2016 to the Stonehenge Visitors’ Centre. Lord Congleton was aware of this before he died.

Both Lord Congleton and his wife Hedi were great supporters of Salisbury Civic Society, his wise counsel and enthusiastic support will be sadly missed.
