Celebrating our Heritage Enhancing our Environment Shaping our Future

Heritage Open Day Weekend

The two Haunch of Venison tours on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th were fully booked  and took round 28 people in total,  attracting a mixture of locals and visitors from the surrounding counties with people for example travelling from Poole, Andover, Basingstoke, and  London.  Visitors were shown the ‘Churchill’ bar and given an insight into architectural features and the history of the building,  feedback was very positive.

There were guided tours over the Harnham Water Meadows on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th September, led by Hadrian Cook.  Over the two visits, the Harnham Water Meadows Trust hosted a total of 39 people. Fortunately the weather was warm and dry and although the river levels are too low at this time of year to demonstrate ‘drowning’, visitors were shown the systems of channels, hatches and the operation and role of the meadows in conservation was described. Harnham Water Meadows Trust plans to host open events in January and February 2019 that will demonstrate the traditional irrigation  of the water meadows.

There were 4 HODS events in Salisbury in total – the other two being the Guildhall and cells; and Mompesson House.
