Tues 9 March 2027

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were supposed to stay at home and be ‘the angel of the hearth’. Reality however is very different, with women working, trading and advertising their businesses in the local press.

This talk by historian Dr Alison Daniell will introduce you to some fascinating businesswomen who worked and thrived in the city of Salisbury, and explain some of the ways they evaded the legal constraints placed on married women at the time.’
