Celebrating our Heritage Enhancing our Environment Shaping our Future

CALL FOR ARTISTS

The new owners of 71 Brown Street, on the corner of Brown and Trinity Streets, have two signs above their ground floor windows that they are not planning to use.  The thought is that these could be signs to inform people about the chequer.  Artists are invited to submit designs for the the signs above the ‘shop windows’.  Could you design and execute the MARSH CHEQUER sign?  For details go to  marshchequer.com

chequers

Many people don’t realise that Salisbury city centre is based on a medieval grid system with each square of buildings or chequer given a different name.  If you have explored Salisbury you will know that some of the chequers are marked in some way but many are not.  The Civic Society is considering a project to rectify this by installing name plaques on all the chequers which will take some time to complete but will be a great bonus for the city.  Here in the Marsh Chequer we have the additional opportunity to celebrate the chequer in a slightly different way.

The closing date for submissions is 29th February 2016.  No submissions will be accepted after that date.

The Marsh Chequer sign project is in conjunction with Salisbury Civic Society; The Salisbury Museum and Plain Arts Salisbury.  Prizes sponsored by Robert Bradley Antiques
