Celebrating our Heritage Enhancing our Environment Shaping our Future

Visit To Two Award-Winning Properties

Wednesday, 17th July 2024

We will be visiting Kite House, Shute End, Alderbury, winner of the Lord Congleton Award for the best new building in the 2023 awards scheme, and Shoebottle Barn at West Grimstead, winner of an award in the 2022 conservation awards scheme.

The owner, Esther Horwood, will show us round Kite House, which was designed by the Winchester architects AR Design Studio, and is a remarkable contemporary building, close to the River Avon and with wonderful views across the water meadows.

At Shoebottle Barn we will be shown round by the owners, Hayley Clark and Ed Waters. This is the conversion of a C17th staddle barn, with an extension, with the designers being Favonius Architects of Salisbury. There are other interesting buildings in the farmyard, awaiting renovation. We will also have the chance to see the two objects which give the barn its name, found during the conversion project after having been deliberately inserted into the walls at the time of construction.

Travel & Parking:

Travel and parking, for Kite House: The house is just south of Petersfinger, post code SP5 3DJ. It can be reached by heading out of Salisbury on the Southampton Road, and then as soon as the dual carriageway starts at Petersfinger, head over into the short right-hand lane. Turn right, following the arrows, and continue towards Alderbury, past the equine hospital on the left, and then turn right just before the village sign, signed to Downton. Kite House will soon become visible through the trees, but the first gateway to it is not being used for access. Continue past the house sign for Wych Avon on the left, and then turn right into the second gateway to Kite House. Someone will be at the gate to direct you to a parking space.

Travel and parking for Shoebottle Barn: The post code is SP5 3RQ. Turn right on leaving Kite House, and then very soon after take the left fork (not signed). This will lead to the road between Petersfinger and Alderbury. Turn right, and carry on right through Alderbury to the junction at the end. Turn left, signed to Salisbury and W Grimstead, ignore the Salisbury turning on the left and carry on round to the right. At the edge of the village, take the right-hand turning, signed to W Grimstead. At the top of a short incline, a track on the left is signed to Shoebottle Barn, and also shown as a footpath. At the bottom of the track, there is parking in the farmyard to the left, and additional parking in the field to the right. The corner into the latter may be difficult for larger vehicles.
